Presspeech vs Scribe AI

Both are free, MIT-licensed Windows tray apps with local Parakeet speech recognition, push-to-talk and toggle modes, dictionaries, voice shortcuts, and no required account or subscription. Scribe AI is a larger Windows 11 workspace with a signed Microsoft Store install, retained history, usage views, per-app profiles, and optional AI cleanup. Presspeech is a narrower deterministic dictation path with no persistent transcript history, Presspeech-authored analytics, or cloud-AI option.

Question Presspeech Scribe AI
Primary workflow Hold or toggle a configurable key, then normally paste after confirming the original destination. An uncertain or changed destination uses explicit clipboard recovery instead. Hold or toggle a configurable key, optionally stop on silence, then insert through Unicode or clipboard methods with fallback. Failed insertion keeps recent text available to copy.
Speech engine A usable NVIDIA CUDA installation selects multilingual Parakeet; a fresh CPU-only installation selects English-only Whisper base.en. Other local models can be selected. Bundles multilingual Parakeet for CPU recognition, with optional verified English-only Moonshine downloads.
Text handling Deterministic dictionary replacements, exact voice shortcuts, filler removal, British spelling, and paste suffixes. There is no generative rewriting path. Dictionary rules, curated vocabulary libraries, snippets, terminal-aware line breaks, and per-app profiles. Optional cleanup can use a local model or a user-configured cloud endpoint.
History and insights Recent transcripts stay in process memory only and clear on quit. Transcript text, audio, and dictionary contents are excluded from logs. Stores local transcript history and usage statistics; audio retention is optional. History can be cleared, and an explicit AI-insight action can send bounded aggregate data to the configured provider.
Install and systems Unsigned prerelease for x64 Windows 11 (recommended) or Windows 10 only while its edition is supported or enrolled in Extended Security Updates; general support ended in 2025. The self-contained app is about 4.4 GB before its model download. Microsoft-signed Store install for Windows 11 on Intel, AMD, or Arm, with the speech model bundled. Unsigned standalone installers and portable builds are also offered.
Privacy boundary Speech recognition is local. No account, Presspeech-authored analytics, cloud transcription, or optional cloud text-processing endpoint exists. Published Windows 0.1.12 does not disable bundled Hugging Face library telemetry during model downloads; see the version-specific network inventory. Speech recognition is local and the publisher receives no automatic telemetry. Optional AI cleanup can stay local or send transcript text—not audio—to a provider the user configures.
Price and license Free and MIT licensed. Free and MIT licensed.

Choose Scribe AI if a signed Store install, Windows on Arm, a bundled multilingual CPU model, optional AI cleanup, per-app profiles, or reviewable local history matters most. Choose Presspeech if Windows 10 compatibility on an edition still supported or enrolled in Extended Security Updates, a CUDA-accelerated multilingual path, no persistent transcript library, no cloud-processing option, and conservative same-destination recovery matter more. Presspeech's Windows build remains a prerelease and is not the lower-friction install.
